King Charles' first Birthday Honours list in full including a number of notable Scots

King Charles is said to be delighted with his first Birthday Honours list as monarch, with more than 1,000 unsung heroes set to be awarded - including several Scottish faces.

It comes just one week after the system was tarnished by disgraced ex-PM Boris Johnson, who used his own resignation honours list to commend close allies in No10.

A total of 1,171 people made the list, with the awards including 332 British Empire Medals (BEM), 471 Medal of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and 236 Order of the British Empire (OBE). Among those honoured, 50% are women and 11% come from ethnic minority backgrounds. Nearly a quarter - 23% - considered themselves to come from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

A number of notable Scots have made the list, including Deputy Leader of the Scottish Labour Party Jackie Baillie who has been awarded a damehood and broadcaster Ken Bruce who recieved an MBE.

Members of the public can put forward for individuals they believe have made a contribution to the community, with an independent committee then whittling down the nominees. Those who are successful are then approved by the monarch and awarded with ah honour.

Celebs

Ken Bruce is among the people recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours (Jonathan Brady/PA Wire)

Scottish broadcaster Ken Bruce and former Rangers footballer John Greig are just some of the famous faces recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List.

Bruce, who hosted his final his final show on BBC Radio 2 in March after nearly four decades, has been awarded with an MBE. And Greig, who spent his entire career at Rangers as player manager and director, is set to receive a CBE.

TV icon Davina McCall, who fronted popular Channel 4 show Big Brother for a decade and more recently has advocated for women's health, has been awarded the title of MBE. The presenter, who published a book about the menopause last year, said: "I can't believe it. It's a great honour and it really means a great deal."

Meanwhile, footballing legend turned pundit Ian Wright has been awarded an OBE for services to Association Football and charity. The former Arsenal striker and England international recently supported fellow pundit Gary Linker after the BBC made the controversial decision to remove him from Match of the Day.

Actress Vicky McClure, who played Detective Inspector Kate Fleming in the BBC drama Line of Duty and starred in This is England '86, also made the honours list. She received an MBE for services to drama and also for charity, after setting up 'Dementia Choir'. Founded in 2018, the group performed at the King's Coronation last month.

Legend of the fashion world and Vogue editor Dame Anna Wintour, 73, is awarded the Companion of Honour - a title that is only granted to 65 people at any one time - alongside Booker-prize winning writer Ian McEwan. The novelist said: "News of the honour, in a letter from the Cabinet Office, was a complete surprise and, naturally, I was delighted.

"I guess it amounts to a really good review. I'm now entering my 54th year of writing fiction. As all dedicated writers know, a literary life is not a career so much as a way of being."

The duo are in good company, with Sir David Attenborough, Sir Elton John, and Dame Judie Dench already on the list of 65 recipients.

Darts player Fallon Sherrock has been made an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours list. She became the first woman to win a match at the PDC World Championship in 2019, defeating Ted Evetts and Mensur Suljovic on her way to the third round at Alexandra Palace, earning the nickname 'Queen of the Palace'.

Wheelchair tennis star and Paralympic gold medal winner Gordon Reid becomes an OBE for services to tennis, while former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans and ex-Lionesses striker Eniola Aluko received MBEs.

Officials

Long-serving Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie has been made a dame (Colin Garvie / Lennox Herald)

The Deputy Leader of the Scottish Labour Party Jackie Baillie has been awarded a damehood. The MSP for Dumbarton said the honour was "totally unexpected", with news of the award "coming as quite a shock" after she was put forward by her constituents.

She is recognised for her major contributions to homelessness and disability rights in Scotland.

And the head of Britain's secret intelligence service is knighted after leading MI6 through the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sir Richard Moore, who first joined the service in 1987 and has served under Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak, said it is a "huge honour and proud day".

He added: "But, as with many such honours, it really belongs to the brilliant men and women of SIS and in the Foreign Office that I've had the privilege to lead in recent years."

The chief of MI6 - who goes by the codename 'C' - is the only member of the service who is publicly named. In 2021, he issued a public apology for the agency's treatment of the LGBT community.

Labour former minister Sir Ben Bradshaw, who served in Tony Blair and Gordon Brown's governments, also receives a knighthood while Tory MPs John Baron, Bob Blackman, Damian Collins and Heather Wheeler are also set to receive awards.

Experts

A doctor who helped revolutionise the way millions of people manage their diabetes after helping to produce the first insulin pen injection has been named in King Charles's Birthday Honours list. Dr Sheila Reith receives a CBE for her groundbreaking medical research that helped bring an end to people using glass syringes and steel needles.

The consultant physician, whose daughter Fiona lived with Type 1 diabetes in the 1970s, received her medal for services to those living with the health condition. Professor Sir John Bell, who was frequently brought in as a Covid expert during reporting on the pandemic, is also recognised for his countless hours dedicated to the UK's effort to tackle the virus.

The Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford joins the small group of 65 people awarded a Companion of Honour. The consultant gynaecologist Alan Farthing, who helped deliver the Prince and Princess of Wales's three children, has also been named as commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

He was part of the team that supported Kate Middleton when she welcomed son Prince George in 2013, daughter Princess Charlotte in 2015 and youngest son Prince Louis in 2018 at the private maternity unit of St Mary's Hospital in London.

Hostages

The brother of a British engineer who was abducted and murdered in Iraq almost 20 years ago has also been honoured. Phil Bigley receives an OBE for his tireless work helping those affected by kidnap and hostage situations globally since the death of his sibling Ken Bigley in 2004.

He joined Hostage International a year after a video of his 62-year-old brother's brutal execution was shared online by his captors in a case that sent shockwaves throughout the world. Mr Bigley said: "I am both shocked and honoured to have been nominated for this award, which I graciously accept in memory of my brother, Ken, and on behalf of our family.

"I wish to thank the many inspirational people at Hostage International that dedicate themselves to helping those affected by kidnap".

His name appears among 110 people recognised for service to the UK overseas, including Terry Waite CBE, who is awarded a knighthood today (SAT). The 84-year-old, who was taken hostage in Lebanon in 1987 and spent 1,763 days in captivity, has since dedicated his life to helping hostages and their families.

The Co-Founder and President of Hostage International has previously said he survived the days in a darkened cell in Beirut by "keeping hope alive". Sir Terry, who was taken hostage while working to free others, told the Daily Mirror in 2016 he was kept in solitary confinement and subject to a mock execution.

He now offers invaluable emotional and practical support to people across the world taken hostage and the homeless.
