Kilkenny GAA confirm DJ Carey's appointment as selector with senior hurlers

DJ Carey's appointment as a new Kilkenny senior hurling selector has been confirmed, while Mickey Comerford comes on board as strength and conditioning coach.

Brian Cody’s decision to bring the pair on board was first reported by Mirror Sport last week and they replace Derek Lyng and Mick Dempsey respectively.

Lyng has been appointed as the county’s new under-20 manager, replacing Carey, having been part of Cody’s management team for six seasons.

Dempsey stood down having been a key component of Cody’s set up since 2005, contributing to eight All-Ireland wins.

In a statement, Kilkenny GAA paid tribute to the former Laois senior footballer and manager for the role he has played in the county’s most successful era ever.

It read: “Kilkenny GAA would like to take this opportunity to thank Michael Dempsey for his contribution to GAA in Kilkenny.

“Michael Dempsey joined Brian Cody in the senior management team in 2005 and has since being a constant presence behind the scenes, no more so than during Kilkenny’s four-in-a -row from 2006-2009 and also in Kilkenny’s All-Ireland successes in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015.

“On behalf of Kilkenny GAA and Brian Cody we wish Michael all the best in the future and to thank him for his immense contribution to hurling in Kilkenny.”

Ex-goalkeeper James McGarry remains on board as selector for a seventh season.

Meanwhile, Lyng will be joined by former county teammates Peter Barry and Michael Rice as his selectors.

Richie Mulrooney has been ratified as minor manager, with Adrian Finan, Marin Carey and Sean Kelly as selectors and the team trainer for 2020 will be James Meagher.

Christy Walsh will continue as the junior football manager.
