Senior Russian official Dmitry Medvedev has issued a direct nuclear warning to the United States following escalating tensions over Ukraine’s military strikes on Russian territory. Dmitry Medvedev made the threat after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s strong comments about striking Russian targets.
The fight between Russia and NATO countries has gotten much worse in recent weeks as Moscow keeps attacking Ukraine. This comes even as President Trump tries to make peace deals. NATO has started new defense moves along its eastern borders, and several NATO countries have had to send fighter jets after Russian drones and planes entered their airspace without permission.
Medvedev, who works as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and used to be Russia’s president and prime minister, hit back hard at Zelensky’s words. “The Kiev drug addict said the Kremlin should know where a bomb shelter is so its occupants can hide when he uses long-range American weapons,” Medvedev wrote on X. “What the freak needs to know is that Russia can use weapons a bomb shelter won’t protect against. Americans should also keep this in mind.”
Trump backs Ukraine’s bigger attacks
In a recent talk with Axios, Zelensky said that President Trump had clearly supported Ukrainian attacks on Russian targets like power plants and weapons factories. Trump also said that if Ukraine gets more long-range American weapons, Kyiv will use them against Russian spots. The Ukrainian president made these comments during meetings at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Some people think Trump’s changing view on Putin shows a big shift from how he used to deal with Russia.

Trump has changed his tone on the Ukraine war, now saying that Ukraine could possibly win back all land taken by Russia. Speaking at a press meeting with Zelensky, Trump said that NATO countries should shoot down Russian aircraft that fly into their airspace. He later wrote on Truth Social that Ukraine could get back all territory taken by Russia since the February 2022 attack.
“Russia has been fighting without purpose for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win,” Trump wrote. He said Russia looks like “a paper tiger” and suggested that when Russian people learn the real cost of the war, Ukraine would be able to take back its land.
The growing crisis has brought two nuclear-armed sides closer to direct fighting, making peace talks much harder. Polish and NATO warplanes recently shot down Russian drones that flew into Polish airspace during attacks on western Ukraine, marking a big step up in the crisis. Zelensky has called this drone shooting by NATO jets “highly significant” for growing Western support.
Moscow has said that US-Russia relations are giving “close to zero” results, while European friends worry more about the fight spreading beyond Ukraine’s borders.
