Kieran Trippier has challenged his Newcastle United teammates to do whatever it takes to secure a Champions League spot. A five-game winless run in the Premier League came to an end as Miguel Almiron’s winner sunk Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at St James’ Park.
It was Trippier who provided the assist for Alexander Isak’s opener, with a set-piece delivery whipped into the box from the right flank. A collective sigh of relief emanated around Tyneside at the full-time whistle as Newcastle leapfrogged above Liverpool - despite boasting a game in hand.
With no other competitions to worry about, the Magpies can go full throttle in the Premier League as they attempt to bring Champions League nights to the North East for the first time since 2003. Trippier has urged the squad to “attack” the final 13 games of the campaign.

“We shouldn’t be shy to say that (the top four is within reach),” he told Sky Sports post-match. “We’re in a great position in the league. We’ve got to take it a game at a time but we’ve got to attack every single game.
“As a club, we want to be in Europe. We want to be in the Champions League but we know how relentless this league is - we know how tough the games are. We’ve got to stick together. (There are) 13 more tough matches, and (we will) see where we are at the end of May.”
The Toon’s on-field skipper also accepted responsibility for Wolves’ 70th-minute equaliser. A failed clearance fell directly to Hwang Hee-Chan, who tapped home a simple finish from close range.
Almiron spared Trippier’s blushes nine minutes later to earn United a much-needed three points. He added: “It’s poor from me really but, you know, that’s why you’ve got teammates around you. We’ve got a great togetherness in the squad and they picked me up when I needed it the most.
“That’s what team sport is all about. I’ve got fantastic teammates here and I’m thankful for Miggy as well for putting the ball in the net.”
