A youth on a push bike deliberately started a grass fire which took hold on Swansea prom, then stayed behind to watch firefighters tackle it, an angler has claimed.
The angler was one of several people fishing nearby on the steps outside Swansea Civic Centre when they spotted a ‘young kid’ on a pushbike arrive at around 9pm on Sunday evening and seemingly deliberately set fire to pampas grass close to the Marriott Hotel.
They claimed the child then returned to watch, once a fire crew had been called to respond to the incident.
One said: “I was enjoying the peace and quiet until a young kid on a pushbike turned up and then set fire to the grass and came back to watch the fire brigade put the fire out.
“Talk about brain dead morons. There were a number of fishermen nearby and hopefully they were able to give a description to police”

A spokesman for Mid and West Fire and Rescue Service said: "On Sunday, December 1, at 9.59pm, firefighters from Swansea Central attended a grass fire, which was deliberately lit, on Oystermouth Road, Swansea city centre.
"Firefighters extinguished the fire, using a hose reel, and left the incident at 10.13pm.
"Starting a deliberate fire is a criminal offence. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the police by phoning 101."
A Swansea Council spokesman added: “We regret that a small area of pampas grass on the beach side of the Civic Centre’s east car park was damaged by fire.
“We encourage anybody with information about the incident to inform the police.
“Our parks team is considering how best to make good the damaged area.”
