Khloe Kardashian has been condemned by PETA for having her cats declawed.
The 41-year-old reality TV star recently opened up about the "really terrible" decision she made to have both her pets - Grey Kitty and Baby Kitty - undergo the procedure, which involves removing all or part of a cat's third toe bones and the attached claws, and now bosses at the animals rights organisation have urged fans of The Kardashians not to follow Khloe's example.
In a statement to the Daily Mail newspaper, ETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations' Daphna Nachminovitch said: "At least Khloe Kardashian knows now that amputating cats’ toes at the joint leaves them with lifelong misery and pain and robs them of their natural ability to stretch, climb, and defend themselves.
"Cats need scratching posts and regular nail trims, not mutilation surgeries done purely for human convenience. PETA urges everyone to avoid Khloe’s mistake and let cats keep the claws they were born with."
Khloe expressed her regret at listening to bad advice and getting her two pets declawed because she is now afraid to let them roam freely outside because they can no longer protect themselves against perceived threats.
Speaking on her Khloe In Wonder Land podcast, she said: “I was really misadvised about getting my cats declawed. I’ve never owned cats before. I didn’t even know that was a thing.
"I feel really, really terrible that I did go in this direction. I feel like that’s why my cats are miserable and it was at my doing.
"My cats wear AirTags. Like, they’re not allowed to even go near a door. I’m so afraid if they get out because they have no way to defend themselves. They lost their protection tools. It makes me sad."
Khloe also admitted she made a mistake by introducing a second cat to her household because they didn't get along.
She said: I have two possessed cats. Grey Kitty was great. Perfect. The saint of a cat. Never did anything wrong.
"So what did I do? We gotta get [daughter] True a second cat, because True wants one. I got Baby Kitty for True’s sixth birthday.
"Once we got Baby Kitty, Grey Kitty started peeing on one of the beds to tell us she hates us and she’s p***** that we have another cat. They’re the same cat. I thought this was great because why would a cat wanna be alone? Big mistake."
