In wake of Washington preparing to reinstate devastating sanctions on Iran’s oil sales and financial sector, Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei said that US President Donald Trump's policies are facing worldwide opposition.
Khamenei said the Washington had failed to reassert its domination over Iran since the country’s 1979 revolution that toppled the US-backed Shah.
“The world opposes every decision made by Trump,” Iranian state television quoted Khamenei as saying during a meeting with thousands of students.
“America’s goal has been to re-establish the domination it had [before 1979], but it has failed. America has been defeated by the Iran over the past 40 years.”
“America's hard power, that is to say, their economic and military power, is declining, too," Khamenei said on Twitter on Saturday, quoting a speech he gave earlier in Tehran.
He claimed that the “US military is extremely confused and, therefore, it uses organizations such as Blackwater to advance its military objectives.”
The US economy "is the same, with $15 trillion of debt and $800 billion of budget deficit," he added.
“America's goal with sanctions is to cripple and hold back Iran's economy, but the outcome is that the push toward self-sufficiency has expanded in the country.”
“This new US president ... has disgraced the remnant of America's prestige and that of liberal democracy,” Khamenei said slamming the Trump administration for its decision to re-impose sanctions on Iran.
Tehran accuses the US administration of seeking to overthrow its clerical regime as tensions between the two sides have surged over the past year. Back in May, Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal and announced the snap-back of sanctions.
Since then, sanctions have been gradually implemented as of August, that converged with popular protests and unprecedented intermittent strikes nationwide in Iran.
