Keynsham woman, 60, admits importing cannabis and single charge of dealing

A 60-year-old Keynsham woman who admitted supplying cannabis has been spared immediate custody.

Police were alerted to Karen Taylor after a package containing cannabis was intercepted in the post.

Bristol Crown Court heard a search of her home revealed some 3.5 kilos of cannabis stashed in a bedroom.

Taylor, of Vandyck Avenue, pleaded guilty to importing and supplying the Class B drug - on a single occasion.

Judge James Patrick handed her seven months' prison suspended for two years.

He told her: "You have experienced tragedy in your life.

"You have lost your good character and this has brought shame on you and those closest to you.

"You allowed your premises to be used for the importation of drugs. You allowed a drug user to be dealing drugs from your premises."

Taylor was ordered to undergo up to 20 days' rehabilitation.

David Maunder, prosecuting, said a package was intercepted at a sorting office in Berkshire in December 2019.

It was addressed to Taylor's home in her maiden name, and was found to contain 456.95g of cannabis in a T-shirt.

Police who visited Taylor's home in March last year found bags of cannabis and scales in a bedroom of a previous occupant.

The value of the drugs recovered ranged from £11,000 to £37,000 depending on how they were sold, the court heard.

A message on a phone recovered related to a drugs order.

'People to take advantage'

Rodney Wilson, defending, said: "She is somewhat infirm and naive and she allowed people to take advantage of her solitary existence and naivety.

"She agreed because she would be paid a minuscule amount here and there."
