Key talking points as Sunderland finally secure their play-off berth with win over ten man Plymouth

Sunderland were finally able to secure their place in the play-offs with a win over Plymouth Argyle.

The Black Cats were good value for their win, ending a run of seven games without victory.

Lynden Gooch was the standout performer at Home Park as Lee Johnson's side ensured they could breathe easy at home to Northampton next weekend.

Here are some of the key talking points from Sunderland's 3-1 win over the Pilgrims:

Black Cats finally secure their play-off berth

It's been a long time coming.

Today's win finally secured their play-off position and they can now breathe a sigh of relief heading into the final game of the season against already relegated Northampton Town.

The Black Cats were comfortable across 90 minutes but let Plymouth back into the game for a spell in the second-half, and were left with a nervy final ten minutes.

Sunderland have made hard work of their final eight games of the season, but fingers crossed today's result is a turning point.

To go from title contenders, to securing a play-off spot with a game to spare will be some psychological hit.

Speaking earlier this week Johnson reiterated that Sunderland would be a better side in the play-offs and he can now give his players some much needed rest ahead of the knockout competition.

Lively Lynden Gooch

The USA international has been of the positives from an otherwise dismal end to the season for Sunderland.

He was brilliant for Sunderland in their draw with leaders Hull, and created a number of chances against Blackpool in midweek.

Gooch was tremendous this afternoon playing behind Ross Stewart in the 10.

His pace and trickery caused problems for the Argyle backline all afternoon and was unfortunate to not get himself on the scoresheet in the first-half.

Gooch shifted over to the right following the break, and won Sunderland the decisive penalty with minutes remaining.

The 25-year-old can be frustrating at times in terms of consistency, but he's hitting his stride right when Sunderland need him.

The absence of Aiden McGeady meant that Gooch and Jordan Jones would be the Black Cats main outlets at Home Park and both were lively throughout.

The duo have proven, as they did during the 2-2 draw with Hull, that they can be relied upon when McGeady isn't in the side.

Speaking earlier this season, Gooch admitted he preferred to play centrally and Lee Johnson said that he envisaged his best position as a nine-and-a-half.

The American has been unfortunate to play much of the season in that position, mainly down to the performances of Aiden O'Brien.

Gooch has been somewhat of an unsung hero for Sunderland this season, despite his inconsistencies. His goal at Wembley helped end the hoodoo and he helped inspire the Black Cats to a win this afternoon.

Sunderland's lapse concentration almost costs them again

There's no doubt Sunderland were the better side, but a lapse in concentration saw Plymouth grab an equaliser through Joe Edwards.

Jordan Jones stood idle as the Pilgrims player drifted in behind Denver Hume.

Edwards got the run on the Sunderland defender and nodded the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

The Black Cats took their foot off the gas for a brief spell and were almost made to pay.

They'll need to make sure they maintain focus in the play-offs for the entirety of games, had they been playing a better side they may have been punished further.
