Kevin Trapp has already sent message to Manchester United amid fresh transfer links

Manchester United will intensify their pursuit of a first-choice goalkeeper in the coming days and reported target Kevin Trapp has already hinted he would consider a transfer offer.

Erik ten Hag's goalkeeper situation is close to crisis point following the release of David De Gea upon the end of his contract. The Spaniard has been in talks over a new deal for some time but figures inside the club are wanting to 'move on' and see now as the perfect time to do so.

A reunion with Andre Onana, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax, has been mooted but Financial Fair Play constraints could force the club to look at cheaper alternatives. Earlier this week, United agreed a fee for Chelsea's Mason Mount but the initial £55million payment is thought to be around half of the club's total summer budget.

As such, the Mirror reported on Saturday evening that interest in Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Trapp has been rekindled. The German international was linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer and admitted he was flattered by the contact.

"As I said during my first spell at Frankfurt, it’s always nice when rumours like this come out," said Trapp of the links to United last August. "It’s a nice acknowledgement. But I can’t say anything about it."

The 32-year-old would verbally commit his future to Frankfurt just days after refusing to be dragged into transfer talk, hinting that United's pursuit was much more concrete than some may have thought.

“There have been a lot of reports about interest from Manchester United," he admitted via Frankfurt's Twitter account. “It’s true that a written offer was tabled. Since it came from such a world-famous club, of course I considered it.

“Yesterday I informed the management of both clubs that I’ve decided to stay at Eintracht. We’ve made history here together and experienced some unforgettable things. I have absolute faith in us!”

Whether United return with another written offer remains to be seen, but Trapp is evidently admired by people at the club and the feeling is reciprocated. He signed a three-year contract extension with Frankfurt in February, but that does not mean the German side wouldn't be open to offers.

Ten Hag is also said to be interested in a move for Feyenoord shot-stopper Justin Bijlow, reverting to a proven tactic of recruiting from the Eredivisie - a league he knows so well. United signed Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Antony last summer, with the latter pair joining their former Ajax manager at Old Trafford.
