Kevin De Bruyne Left Out Of Belgium Squad Due To Injury

Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne runs during the English FA Cup third round soccer match between Manchester City and Huddersfield Town, at the Etihad stadium in Manchester, England, Sunday, Jan. 7,

Belgium's national team has announced that Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne will be absent from the upcoming squad due to a precautionary measure related to a slight groin strain. De Bruyne, who recently returned to action after a five-month absence due to a hamstring injury, will miss Belgium's matches against the Republic of Ireland and England this week.

Coach Domenico Tedesco explained that the decision to omit De Bruyne was made in consultation with the player and medical staff, considering the risk involved in his current condition. The focus is on ensuring De Bruyne's full recovery for the European Championship, and it was deemed best for him to rest and recuperate at his club, Manchester City.

In other news, Tedesco's contract has been extended for two more years, leading Belgium to the 2026 World Cup. Under his guidance, Belgium has maintained an unbeaten record in the ten games he has overseen. However, a disagreement with the regular first-choice goalkeeper has led to Thibaut Courtois not being selected during Tedesco's tenure.

Belgium recently secured a smooth qualification for Euro 2024 by finishing at the top of their group with an impressive 20 out of 24 points. The upcoming fixtures for Belgium include a match against Ireland in Dublin on March 23, followed by a high-profile encounter with England at Wembley Stadium three days later.

The Belgium squad for the upcoming matches features a mix of experienced players and promising talents across all positions, showcasing the depth and quality of the national team's roster.
