Kerry to appeal Stephen O'Brien's Meath black card to avoid All-Ireland final suspension

Kerry are set to appeal Stephen O'Brien's black card against Meath in a bid to free him from suspension for the All-Ireland SFC final against Dublin on September 1.

O'Brien picked up his third black card of the year for a foul on Peter Harte in the last minute of Kerry's 1-18 to 0-18 semi-final victory over Tyrone at Croke Park this afternoon.

The first one occurred against Galway in the league and while a black card alone doesn't count at this stage of the season, Kerry's goalscoring hero against the Red Hands was also shown a red card in that February encounter.

He received a second black card in Kerry's final Super 8s game nine days ago but the Kingdom are confident that O'Brien will get off.

The Kenmare man confirmed to RTE that knew he was on two black cards coming into the Tyrone game.

"I think the black card in the Meath game was very harsh," O'Brien said. "I was running off the ball and it was an accidental head clash, so we’ll be certainly looking to appeal that one".
