Kerala: Don’t let teachers skip plagiarism test, says SUCC

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) has deplored an alleged demand placed by a section of college teachers before the government that the research papers published by them should not be checked for plagiarism.

The demand, said the committee, was placed by a group of teachers seeking professorship. As per the UGC norms, publication of a minimum of 10 research papers in reputed journals is a prerequisite for considering a candidate for professorship.

“Most teachers have submitted research papers in journals published by some Delhi-based institutions. Some teachers’ union leaders continue to put pressure on the collegiate education director to exempt these papers from plagiarism checks,” committee chairman R S Sasikumar said here onMonday.

Flouting the UGC norms, the Calicut and MG Universities have decided to grant professorships to retired teachers too. Teachers’ associations are demanding a similar approach by other universities as well. Though the UGC had approved professorship status to college teachers as well in 2018, the same has been implemented in Kerala in 2021.

The campaign committee demanded the higher education secretary and collegiate education director to insist plagiarism check for all papers published since 2016. Also, those who retired from service should not be considered for professorship at any cost, they said.

A total of 152 candidates have applied for professorship. Of this 20 are retired hands. March 7 is the last date for submitting research papers for check.
