Kerala: Case against 4 for visiting dam site

IDUKKI: In a case of serious security lapse, the Mullaperiyar police on Wednesday registered a case against four people after they visited the Mullaperiyar dam site, which is a prohibited area. An official of the water resources department of Tamil Nadu accompanied them on their visit on Sunday.

Retired sub-inspectors of Kerala Police, Rahim and Abdul Salam, John Varghese, who has retired from the Delhi police, and his son John Varghese visited the dam site along with an executive engineer of Tamil Nadu water resources department on Sunday. The four-member team reached the dam site in a Tamil Nadu-owned boat.

The police personnel who were on duty on Sunday did not block the team and allowed them entry to the dam. But the officers did not enter the details of the visitors in the general diary register. Mullaperiyar deputy SPwas unaware of the visit. After the visit sparked controversy, a primary probe was held by Mullaperiyar deputy SP N Nandan Pillai, who found lapses on the part of officers.

It has been learned that the police will take department-level action against the cops who allowed illegal entry to the visitors.
