Kenyan police disperse protesters with tear gas in Nairobi

Protesters had planned demonstrations on 7 July, a date marking 35 years since Kenya’s first major rally for multiparty democracy.

Tensions have risen in recent weeks, following deadly confrontations with police, including the June protests that left at least 16 dead.

Major roads into the city were blocked on Monday, with police turning back vehicles and restricting pedestrian access to those with essential duties. Most businesses remained closed amid the heavy security presence.

Authorities barricaded roads to parliament and the president’s office, while clashes also broke out in towns like Kitengela, where protesters lit bonfires and were dispersed with tear gas.
