Kentucky Route 15 in Breathitt County gets federal grant to protect from rockfalls

The federal Department of Highways is granting $24.5 million to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to help improve a segment of Kentucky Route 15 in Breathitt County.

It would help protect a section of the road from rockfalls and roadside erosion.

It would be constructed south of the city of Jackson, by the unincorporated community of Quicksand.

The U.S. Department of Transportation says the corridor is located within a rural Historically Disadvantaged Community, which is at risk to the effects from climate change. It’s also a corridor that connects rural communities to larger cities and highways.

Another $5 million in state funding is also going to the project, bringing the total cost to $29.5 million.
