Kentucky is seeing some growth in egg production. That’s according to Jacquie Jacob, a poultry specialist with the University of Kentucky. She said expansion has come in free-range farming, but she added there is only one commercial operation. Jacob said free range is generally defined as having some access outside. Minor growth is seen in cage-free chicken production.
“Some are switching cage-free but only about 35% of all the egg production in the United States is actually cage-free for egg production,” said Jacob.
Jacob said there’s certainly still interest in establishing backyard chicken flocks. But, she noted it’s important to thoroughly research and understand local regulations, which can vary from county to county.
Avian flu continues to be a threat to poultry farmers across the Commonwealth. That includes those commercial and backyard chicken operations that focus on egg production. Jacob said the health concern can reach into the breeding population.
“And if the breeders are dying off, then that takes a longer time to recover the numbers of birds. And it’s affecting all species,” said Jacob.
47 states have been affected by avian influenza. An outbreak was reported last October in Fayette County. That was in a backyard flock of mixed species.
