Kenedy returns, Barkley transfer hint - 3 things spotted in Chelsea training ahead of Brighton

Chelsea were back in Cobham on Monday looking to rectify the attacking problems that in essence ended their Premier League title challenge at the weekend against Manchester City.

"We expected more from all our offensive players in the last match. I think we had enough offensive actions, transitions, to hurt Man City more than we did. If this answers your question, maybe not 100%, but he is included in our offensive component," Tuchel reflected ahead of Brighton.

"He's a key player, so there will always be pressure but not more pressure than he puts on himself. And we need to find a mix between all the expectations, the pressure, and to be relaxed enough to play your best game. It's not only about pushing, squeezing, demands, it's also about feeling peace and being relaxed on the pitch.

"Things will fall into place when we keep on working hard and this is what we will keep on doing."

Well, there has only been a day and a bit for Tuchel and co to dwell on these attacking woes as they now look ahead to their tricky assignment against a Brighton side that shocked the European Champions last month with Danny Welbeck's last minute equaliser at Stamford Bridge.

The Seagulls come into this one full of confidence despite not beating their M23 rivals Crystal Palace on Friday night due to Conor Gallagher's brilliance.

Nevertheless, Tuchel didn't want to underestimate the 'unique' threat that Graham Potter's side pose.

"I agree with you that they are a tough side to beat and play against. It is the first time for me to play against them in their stadium and they are not shy to play one-on-one, do high pressing across the whole pitch, and maybe that already answers part of the question," Tuchel waxed lyrical of his opponents in his Monday press conference.

"We have to win challenges not only defensively but offensively. You have to make a point, prove yourself, and you have to step up in quality and be ready no matter what because we will face a brave and very unique, strong opponent. If we want to win, we need to be at the top level."

Without no further ado, football.london takes a look at the three key things that were spotted from Chelsea training.

Kenedy returns

Layvin Kurzawa, Lucas Digne and Sergino Dest were a few names that were being linked to a west London move before the transfer window opened but it seems home comforts could be the order of the day.

Despite stuttering in their attempts to recall Emerson Palmieri back from his Lyon amid recent optimism, the European Champions did manage to recall the forgotten man Kenedy back from his loan spell in Brazil with Flamengo.

The indication was initially that he would be sent out straight away on loan but these recent training pictures coupled with Tuchel's recent hint on the situation could prove otherwise.

Tuchel stated on the situation at hand: "We cannot say Kenedy is the solution. He can be a solution. The situation has not changed, we have long-term injuries with the wing-backs.

"We suffered a lot in the midfield from Covid and injuries and now our midfielders are more or less coming back we suffer with our central defenders.

"Nothing has changed but it needs to make sense, it needs to be possible, it needs to make sense on a high level and in quality and personality. We have looked into the market, nothing has changed, we have all options and also the option to say no."

Amid the uncertainty surrounding Kenedy's future, one thing that is for certain is that he could make a surprise appearance against the Seagulls as he was pictured back in Cobham training getting stuck in, with pictures showing the Brazilian hard in battle with the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho and other teammates.

If Emerson was to be recalled back successfully before the January deadline surpasses, football.london understands that the man in question then may be granted another loan spell.

Mason Mount out to prove a point

It's always easy to look at certain situations in hindsight but one of the major decisions Tuchel got wrong at the weekend was not starting Mason Mount in the biggest game of the season for the west Londoners.

The fact he only clocked up just over 10 minutes in the latest game was a surprise to many who thought that there could be something cynical to this specific decision to drop one of the main attacking threats.

But as Tuchel explained pre-match, the decision was based solely on wanting 'fresh legs' in the side - an admission that backfired remarkably as Glenn Hoddle predicted at the time.

"Everybody is an option and it’s not easy to choose. We went with the characteristic of players, Kovacic and N’Golo for example, rather than Jorginho," Tuchel explained.

"They’re more dribblers and drivers than passers and I think it suits that a bit more in midfield.

"[We picked] Christian and Hakim for their fresh legs and because they’re a bit more runners than for example Mason.

"We thought about it [a false nine] to maybe create a bit of an overload but I think it can suit Romelu as well.”

On Monday on a dark Surrey evening, Mount was pictured practising his shooting skills in what seemed a drill that aimed to enhance the attacking play that was absent on Saturday afternoon.

Ross Barkley still lingering around

One man who was expected to leave on loan this month was the Evertonian who has only featured 12 times in all competitions - with most of those being small cameos from the substitutes' bench.

Amid interest from the likes of Burnley, Newcastle and Leeds United, nothing has been agreed as of yet due to the high wage demands surrounding the attacking midfielder.

Tuchel, despite liking the professionalism shown by Barkley since he took over from Lampard, has hinted that something still could happen before the end of the month despite little movement regarding a potential exit so far.

The German said prior to the Chesterfield FA Cup win: “We haven’t discussed it yet [a loan deal]. It depends what Ross wants and what possibilities there are and what makes sense. Let’s see.

“There’s always a chance it is not like it is the FA Cup and here’s your chance. There’s always a chance to make it onto the pitch, especially with a lot of COVID and injury cases.

“The situation has not changed, not for Ross, not for anybody else.”

The 28-year-old's professionalism was once again shown in this training session with the Englishman being pictured in action alongside current contract rebel Antonio Rudiger.
