Ken Nightingall dead: Star Wars' iconic boom operator and 'pink shorts boom guy' dies

Star Wars' iconic boom operator Ken Nightingall has died.

The behind-the-scenes star died aged 92 at his UK home on Tuesday earlier this week.

The Association of Motion Picture Sound (AMPS) confirmed the sad news.

Ken was famed for being the boom operator in Hollywood and his most notable work was on Star Wars: A New Hope.

But on the Star Wars: A New Hope set, he stood out from the stars and TV crew because he was shirtless and wearing a small pair of pink shorts.

He was famous overnight when the 1976 movie set pictures emerged on Reddit in 2015.

Ken was stripped down to his pants, socks and boots in the snap which garnered him the nickname "pink shorts boom guy".

Fans even paid tribute to the star by dressing as him at cosplay conventions.

Now tributes for the star were flooding social media after the news of his death hit headlines.

Gravity and Black Hawk Down sound mixer Chris Munro hailed the boom operator as a "legend" in the entertainment spheres.

He wrote: “I first met Ken when I entered the industry over 50 years ago.

"He was immensely supportive of me as I carved my early career as a young sound mixer. “Legend” is the word that springs to mind when I try to describe him.

"He will be sadly missed by our film community but his is a life and career that should be celebrated. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Last year, Ken gave an interview to talk about the iconic pictures which rocketed him to fame.

He spoke out 40 years after the picture had been taken.

The Star Wars star admitted it was boiling hot when he was out filming in North Africa to shoot the scenes on Luke Skywalker's planet Tatooine.

"It was very, very hot," he told ABC news at the time.

Ken was delighted with his new fan base.

He added: "I think it's very nice... They seem to like it. Good for them."
