Sir Ken Dodd ’s signature tune Happiness has been re-recorded by celebrities and NHS workers as a tribute to the health service.
Stars including actors Ricky Tomlinson and Glenda Jackson, 83, have recreated the classic by the legendary comic, who was known for his epic stand-up shows and tickling sticks.
Sir Ken’s widow, Lady Anne Dodd, said the song will “pay a warm, joy-filled tribute to NHS workers for their brave efforts to keep us all safe from Covid-19”.
Sir Ken released Happiness – penned by US star Bill Anderson – in 1964. The chorus was changed for the new single.
The Royle Family star Tomlinson, 80, said: “We thought it’s time we did an authentic Scouse song to get the nation smiling again and say a huge thank you to all our amazing NHS staff.”
All the stars on the single are from Sir Ken’s native Liverpool or nearby.
It also features pop star Rick Astley, 54, comic Jimmy Tarbuck, 80, Strictly judge Shirley Ballas, 59, actors Les Dennis, 66, and Claire Sweeney, 48, and T’Pau star Carol Decker, 62.
The song, which also features dozens of nurses and ordinary families, is also intended to "bring a little light-hearted relief to the nation".
Much-loved star Sir Ken died at 90 in 2018. Before he died he praised the care he received from the "marvellous" NHS, saying "it all makes me cry with gratitude".
Lady Anne said: “Ken would have loved the idea of cheering up everyone across the nation by singing Happiness.”
