Hit TV show Frasier is set to return, with actor Kelsey Grammer reprising his role as the titular character.

The show was one of the most successful comedies of the 1990s, winning 37 Emmy awards over its 11 seasons between 1993 to 2004.

Grammer, 66, who will also serve as executive producer on the series, said: “I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr Frasier Crane.”

There has so far been no word on whether any of Grammer’s former co-stars will be joining him for the reboot. The announcement prompted viewers to ask whether the role of Frasier’s brother Niles, played by David Hyde Pierce, would return.

Other characters who featured in the comedy show included English housekeeper Daphne Moon, played by Jane Leeves, and Frasier’s producer Roz Doyle, played by Peri Gilpin. John Mahoney, who played Frasier’s father, died in 2018.

Grammer has played Frasier in three series – Cheers, Wings and the show that bears the character’s name.

He has won widespread critical acclaim, with Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award wins for playing the character.

Frasier’s revival is being produced for Paramount+, the rebranded streaming service from US entertainment giant ViacomCBS.

As well as the Frasier revival, Paramount+ also announced crime drama series Criminal Minds is making a comeback.

Executive producer Erica Messer is overseeing a 10-episode anthology, it was announced. Paramount+ will also be home to docuseries The Real Criminal Minds.

ViacomCBS’ existing subscription streaming service, CBS All Access, will be rebranded as Paramount+ on March 4 in the US.

It is set to expand internationally later this year, the company said.
