Kellie Harrington wins 10th elite National Championship, while Amy Broadhurst suffers shock defeat

It was a night of contrasting emotions for two of Ireland's biggest boxing stars as Kellie Harrington clinched a 10th National title, while Amy Broadhurst suffered a shock defeat in the final.

Harrington will have to make room in her trophy cabinet after cruising to victory in Dublin on Saturday evening. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist was paired up with Zara Breslin of Tramore in the final of the 60kg division and outclassed her young opponent throughout.

In her first fight on Irish soil as Olympic champion, Harrington, who was representing her local club St Mary's, picked apart her opponent and was awarded a unanimous decision victory on all five judges scorecards (30-26, 30-26, 30-25,30-24,30-24.)

It's a fine start to 2023 for Harrington who took home gold in the European Championships last year.

With the Olympics just 18 months away, Harrington seems destined to be one of the top seeds at Paris 2024.

Many expected Amy Broadhurst to win in similar fashion. The Dundalk woman however fell to a shock defeat to the unfancied Gráinne Walsh.

Walsh stormed through the final two rounds to win 3-2 and cause one of the biggest upsets in recent history at the National Championships.

Having won World, European and Commonwealth gold in 2022, it's back to the drawing board for Broadhurst after a disappointing start to the new year. Walsh on the other hand is in dreamland after securing the biggest win of her career.
