Katie McCabe injury update as Ireland captain gives Vera Pauw major fitness headache

Vera Pauw admits she is in the dark about Katie McCabe’s ankle scare.

The Girls in Green fly out to Australia on Friday afternoon, with the Arsenal star giving manager Pauw a major World Cup fitness headache.

She rolled over her ankle after 14 minutes in Ireland's clash with France on Thursday but played on before finally going off just after the half-hour.

“She rolled over the ankle, stepped off the foot of the opponent. We cannot say anything now, we will see how it goes, hopefully not too bad,” said Pauw.

The Ireland boss added that McCabe’s loss contributed to the three-goal defeat to France, one of the favourites for this year’s tournament.

“I was so, so proud and it’s such a shame that in two minutes individual mistakes (can happen), but that is why we play these games. You can see the difference in quality,” she said.

“But we have done so, so well. And the third goal is also an individual mistake, a runner from midfield.

“Katie is fantastic on the pitch and you miss that.

“It (McCabe’s departure) definitely changed the game, we were in control. You can’t blame Izzy. Katie is extraordinary.”
