Katie Hopkins Twitter account is suspended

Right-wing columnist and commentator Katie Hopkins has had her Twitter account suspended after complaints from campaigners - including Countdown's Rachel Riley.

Hopkins, who used to have a radio show and a TV shoiw as well as writing a column for The Mail, has more than one million followers on Twitter.

Only one tweet is currently visible on her account, which is a retweet in reference to the rapper Stomzy. It says: "If Katie Hopkins’ latest tweets on Stormzy don’t constitute incitement to racial hatred I really don’t know what does. She is a criminal. @Twitter needs to act..."

Rachel Riley met Twitter representatives with the Centre for Countering Digital Hate campaign group in a call to remove Hopkins' account, reports DevonLive.

CEO Imran Ahmed told The Independent: "We are pleased that preliminary action appears to have been taken by Twitter against the identity-based hate actor, Katie Hopkins following productive discussions with Twitter’s UK office,” said CEO Imran Ahmed.

“There is a long road ahead before social media is made safe for dialogue, information exchange and the formation and maintenance of relationships.

“The fact parents are so hesitant and fearful of allowing children onto social media platforms shows how toxic many of these environments have become.

“We believe social media can empower the world to be even better, but handing megaphones to hate actors is irresponsible and dangerous.”

In 2018, Hopkins had to sell her five-bedroom home in Exeter to pay off  a £500,000 legal bill after the writer Jack Monroe sued her for libel and won.

The worst things Katie Hopkins has ever said

Rising to fame on the 2009 series of BBC's The Apprentice, Hopkins has earned a reputation as one of Britain's most outspoken celebrities.

She starred in a TLC documentary, My Fat Story, in which she gained three stone and challenged herself to shed all the weight in just three months in her bid to prove how easy it is to solve Britain's obesity problem.

She was also previously a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother.
