Kate Middleton compared to Lara Croft as she scales sky palace in Belize jungle

Royal fans compared Kate Middleton to Lara Croft as she joined Prince William on a visit to an ancient Mayan site in Belize on Monday.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 40, was likened to the Tomb Raider film character after dressing down in khaki trousers, a white T-shirt and black sunglasses.

Swapping her polished look for practical outdoor clothing, Kate channeled her inner adventurer and prepared to scale a Mayan 'sky palace' deep in the jungle.

The royal outing marked the third day of William, 39, and Kate's Caribbean tour with a visit to the Mayan archaeological site Caracol.

Fans were quick to comment on how the Duchess bore resemblance to Lara Croft, played by Angelina Jolie in the films Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Rider: The Temple Of Life.

"This is some Lara Croft and Indiana Jones energy. Love it," one person said.

"The Duchess is giving Lara Croft vibes in that outfit," another commented.

"I was thinking the same thing," a third chimed.

Kate sported a simple John Lewis top, £70 G-Star RAW trousers and £57 Superga 2750 trainers as she learnt about the history of the ancient site in the Chiquibul Forest.

The couple marvelled at the ancient ruins, spectacular scenery and the country's tallest man-made structure, known as the sky palace.

Sharing a photo of their trip to Instagram, many fans compared the Duchess to Lara Croft who was famously played by Angelina Jolie.

Kate and William were guided around the Mayan ruins at Caracol where they shared a giggle over a group of over-exuberant photographers.

The couple had lined themselves up for a picture in front of the ruins but the photographers had comically lined up at either side of them meaning each group was spoiling the other's shot.

As the camera crew expressed their frustration, Kate could be seen laughing with William who commented "one side's getting cross with the other side. You're in each other's photos."

The pair are set to continue on to both the Bahamas and Jamaica later this week after their stay in Belize.

Their current week-long tour was planned as a kickstart to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations as the commonwealth celebrates her 70 years as monarch this year.

William last visited Belize as a teenager in 2000 when he reportedly learned jungle survival skills with Welsh Guards who were receiving training from the British Army Training Support Unit as part of Exercise Native Trail.
