Kate Garraway used her body to cushion Derek Draper after he fell from a wheelchair

Kate Garraway spoke of the emotional moment that she used her own body to break husband Derek's fall when he tumbled out his wheelchair.

The mum-of-two was helping her husband, who was placed in a coma last year after contracting severe Covid, move to his bed when he slipped.

Derek, who now requires 24 hour care, was not hurt thanks to his loving wife who threw herself under him as he fell.

Despite brave Kate helping her husband, she became trapped and struggled to get him up.

Speaking of the moment on ITV's Caring For Derek, Kate said: "He went down and I was trying to say 'are you ok?', and he was like 'yep' and then we couldn't get him up.

"It was so awful, I felt so sorry for him, the kids had gone out to the fireworks. Billy came back and he was so great."

Kate said how her son Billy told his dad that "he was in a bit of a pickle", to which Derek replied: "yes I am, Bill".

Speaking from her living room, Kate said: "And then Darcey came down the road and was fortunately with her friend's parents and I said 'go and get Polly's dad'."

Kate said how she asked her husband of 15 years if he was ok with Darcey's friend's parents coming to intervene.

"I said to Derek, 'are you ok with this?' And he looked me hard in the eye and he said 'Kate I know my predicament, we need help.'"

Polly's dad then got behind Derek and the three of them helped to lift him up.

The former lobbyist was hospitalised with severe Covid in March 2020 and was later placed in a medically-induced coma.

He woke up months later and was finally able to go home in April 2021.

Kate previously spoke on Piers Morgan's Life Stories - the show she now hosts - and said the virus had "devastated" Derek's health.

His digestive system, kidneys, liver, heart and nervous system had all been affected by Covid.

The dad-of-two now requires 24-hour care and Kate spoke about how he has a "kind of heartbreak in his eyes".

She told Piers: "Derek dreams about the ‘before’, and every morning it’s just so, so awful seeing him wake up, and the realisation of where he is.

“There’s a kind of heartbreak in his eyes, every single morning. You can just see it.

“It reminds me of when you’d have a horrible breakup and wake up in the morning, feeling all right - and then that sort of sucker punch of remembering.”
