Kate Garraway tells This Morning about 'miraculous things' husband Derek Draper is now doing

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has told ITV's This Morning that her husband Derek Draper has been doing "miraculous things" - but still needs 24-hour care.

Derek was admitted to hospital in March last year with Covid-19 coronavirus symptoms and has now returned home after being released from hospital following a year-long battle with the virus.

However, earlier this month, her GMB co-star Ben Shephard revealed that Derek, a former political adviser, still needs 24-hour care and "so much equipment” that Kate says it’s like having a hospital ward at home.

Speaking today on This Morning, Kate said Derek is "saying some words" and "remembers extraordinary things" - but he's "physically very changed" and "everything has to be done for him".

She told Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: "For a long period, he was in the induced coma and then in the middle of the summer last year they realised that he was just in a coma and he couldn't wake up.

"And then there was a huge period through the autumn of hoping and trying to get some response - and now, you know, there are things that he does that are miraculous.

"He remembers extraordinary things. He's saying some words - but it's definitely not a conversation and he's physically very changed. Everything has to be done for him.

"So, we have a very different life.

"We've got incredible support at the moment. Hopefully, he can stay at home and we can carry on with the life that we feel we want to have.

"But he does need a huge amount of support. He needs 24-hour care and not even care that I could do, even if I could stay awake for 24 hours - which sometimes, in these jobs, we've had a crack at.

"But, even if I could be awake for 24 hours, I couldn't do it because it's specific medical stuff."
