Kate Garraway says people accuse her of 'not caring about Derek' while she's on GMB

Kate Garraway has revealed that people accuse her of not caring about her husband Derek Draper while she is on Good Morning Britain.

The host returned to the ITV programme after a couple of days off following her husband’s ‘challenging’ birthday.

She told her co-host Adil Ray that she has been criticised for “having a laugh and a joke” on the show and accused of not being worried about her husband, who is still in intensive care following his coronavirus battle.

Kate spoke of her personal experience shortly before welcoming Laura Heath to the show, a paramedic who was trolled for posting a glamorous selfie during the covid pandemic.

“With me doing this show, if we’re having a laugh and a joke because that’s our job in the morning, to cheer everyone up,” said Kate.

“People then say, 'hang on does that not mean that you’re not worried about Derek or you’re not feeling sad about it?'

“I think it’s that - obviously she [Laura] is professional, she’s doing her job, they then think, 'why are you posting and posing when you should be saving lives?'

“Not understanding that actually we are all human and the most important thing is that we have to laugh and smile.”

This came as Kate returned to the breakfast programme after two days off following Derek’s 53rd birthday on Saturday.

She explained that she had spoken to him via video call and got him a cake, but confessed the day was "challenging".

She added that her children Darcey and Billy are handling the situation “brilliantly”.

"It's very challenging, they're doing brilliantly with it, though," Kate said.

"We managed to do it with Derek's family as well, we managed to technically hook up and sing happy birthday and just hope that the love seeps through."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
