Kate Garraway reads heartfelt poem on Royal Carols ahead of Christmas with Derek

Kate Garraway delivered a heartwarming message about love on Royal Carols: Together at Christmas.

The evening, which was hosted by the Duchess of Cambridge, paid tribute to 'inspirational' people who served their communities during the pandemic

Kate, 54, has had an incredibly tough year as her husband Derek Draper continues to battle long Covid.

The Good Morning Britain presenter has spoken openly about her struggle since the 54-year-old's diagnosis, but delivered a message of hope with her delivery of Love Came Down at Christmas by Christina Rossetti.

Standing at a lectern in Westminster Abbey wearing a cream coat and red jumper, Kate read: "Love came down at Christmas, love all lovely, love divine, love was born at Christmas, star and angels gave the sign.

"Worship we the Godhead, love incarnate, love divine, worship we our Jesus, but wherewith for sacred sign, love shall be our token, love be yours, and love be mine.

"Love to God and all men, love for plea, and gift and sign."

Derek contracted Covid in early 2020 and was hospitalised for a year before returning home and still has issues with mobility and being able to communicate.

Speaking to Piers Morgan on his Life Stories show the mum-of-two admitted her husband was in a "terrible state" after becoming the worst affected living Covid patient in the UK.

Piers pointed out. "He spent 13 months in hospital - the longest stay of anyone who survived the disease. What has Covid done to your husband?"

Kate replied: It's devastated him. From the top of his head to the tip of his toe. His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system.

"We're pretty sure that the inflammation did pass through the brain.

"He still can't communicate, he still has issues with mobility. Fundamentally, he's in a terrible state. Look, he's alive, Piers.

However opening up about what Christmas would be like this year for the family - including their children Darcey (15) and Billy (12) - Kate told Woman's Own magazine: "This year, we have got him home - and fingers crossed we can keep him home.

"Of course, he's not going to be putting on his Santa costume going out with Darcey for a father-and-daughter Christmas shop or the same with Billy.

"None of those things are on the horizon at the moment so it's adjusting to a new normal but also grateful he's here at all which we didn't have at all last year and feared would never happen."
