Kate Garraway is converting her home ready for when husband Derek Draper can return home from hospital.
The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter has overhauled the ground floor of their London home so Derek could use it when he comes home to live.
She has made it wheelchair accessible and already has a hospital bed in the lounge which will be his new bedroom.
Viewers will see the renovations taking place in the new ITV documentary Finding Derek.
The changes to the house were made last year in the hope he could visit but that was before lockdown.
Since then Kate has been unable to visit Derek in hospital and his condition has not improved so a home visit will not happen soon.
Kate said: “Things have regressed a little bit this year since January, but how much that is to do with the restrictions of not being able to visit, is unclear.
“It felt like we were moving forward at Christmas, now it feels like we’ve slipped back.
“And I’ve felt like I’m sort of hanging over the side of a ship, trying to hold onto him, so that when he kind of bobs up from this ocean of unconsciousness, you can see him sort of click in and you don’t know whether it’s because he can suddenly find a way to get out.”
Derek, 53, has now been in hospital for a year. Although the coronavirus has left his system his body is dealing with kidney failure, damage to his liver and pancreas and heart failure.
He and Kate have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions, from the highs of Derek recently growing back his usual stubble and telling Kate “I love you forever and a day” in a video chat, to the moment last November he considered giving up completely.
