Kate Ferdinand shares how Rio's son sussed out she was pregnant again after miscarriage heartache

Kate Ferdinand has shared the sweet way she and her husband Rio told their children that she was pregnant. The former reality star announced over the weekend that she was expecting her second child with the former footballer, several months after opening up about a heartbreaking miscarriage.

Kate, who shared two-year-old son Cree with her husband Rio, took to her Instagram to confirm the happy news on Sunday morning (January 29). The 31-year-old, who married former footballer Rio in 2019, could be seen in a black and white video walking away from the camera.

The clip, set to Minnie Riperton's Lovin' You, then showed Kate turn around as she beamed for the camera before opening her coat and lovingly placing her hand on her blossoming baby bump as she sported a figure-hugging dress. Kate, who is stepmother to husband Rio's children Tate, 13, Lorenz, 15, and Tia, 11, captioned the heartwarming post: "We’ve been praying for you…" before quickly being flooded with congratulatory messages.

On Monday (January 30), Kate returned to Instagram and gave her fans a second glimpse at her growing baby bump. The 28-year-old shared a glam bathroom selfie while thanking fans for their messages since revealing her and Rio's news to the world.

"Thank you so much for all of your lovely messages, we are all just so excited," she captioned her post. "So happy we’ve shared this with you, I’ve found it hard keeping this one quiet." The post was, again, inundated with positive messages including from Rochelle Humes who said: "So happy for you all," and Luisa Zissman who replied: "Oh amazing! Congrats."

But with 'so much to catch up', Kate decided to record a brief episode of her Blended podcast. In the recording, she shared how she and Rio, who she married in 2019, told her step-children Lorenz, 16, Tate, 14, and Tia, 11, the happy news.

"We actually told the kids on Christmas Eve," Kate laughed as she explained the details. "We put it in their Christmas Eve boxes. Anyone that's got more than one child, you tell them, 'Let's all do this at the same time - no one open the box before the other person'.

"And one of them - Lorenz, I'm going to out you - opened it first. I've got it on video, it's really funny. Lorenz opens it and he looks at us and he keeps quiet. He's old enough to keep quiet. Tia then opens it and screams, and Tate's like, 'You've opened it before me!'.

"And Cree does not know what's going on. I wish I could share the video, it's really, really funny." Kate, who became step-mother to Rio's children from his previous marriage to their mum Rebecca Ellison - who tragically lost a short battle with cancer in 2015, went on to explain why they told them the joyous news when they did.

"We told them on Christmas because I love a little drink with dinner at the Christmas table and my clothes were getting a little bit tight - I feel like my body has stretched a little faster this time," Kate said.

"And actually Tate, he sat us down about four weeks before at the dinner table - I think Rio was at the World Cup - and he said, 'I've got an announcement to make - I know you're pregnant!'. I was flustered and at this stage, I still didn't want to tell him or any of the kids just in case. I said, 'No you don't - you don't know I'm pregnant because I'm not pregnant', and I feel like from that moment on, he's been on me."

She then added: "Being pregnant with Cree versus teenage kids is just so different. Cree doesn't know what's going on. He just can't tell if my belly is getting bigger or anything like that. But having teenagers and being pregnant, you can't really hide much from them."

It comes after Kate revealed in July last year that she and Rio had suffered a miscarriage. Posting to the social media platform on July 27, Kate shared a black and white snap of herself with her feet up on a hospital bed as she donned a medical gown. She explained to her 1.4million followers how she was admitted to hospital after a routine scan failed to detect her baby's heartbeat.

She wrote: "The last time I was in this hospital I was having Cree, but this time it was because out baby had no heartbeat in our 12 week scan and I had to have surgery. We were so excited & planning a space for our new baby in our family, we just couldn't wait to see our news with you all, but unfortunately sometimes life just doesn't go as we plan."

She heartbreakingly added: "So much to say, but somehow I can't find the words. Absolutely devastated & heartbroken ...but couldn't be more grateful for the hugs I got from my big(er) babies coming through the door when we arrived home."
