Police shoots man accused of stabbing in Shivamogga

Shivamogga: Karnataka police on Tuesday shot at accused Mohammad Zabi who allegedly stabbed a person on Monday after two groups clashed over displaying flexes of their leaders here to mark Independence Day.

Zabi was shot in his leg with a service pistol by Inspector Manjunath S Kuri when he allegedly tried to attack policemen with a knife when they had gone to arrest him in a search operation, the police said.

A case under sections 353 and 307 of the IPC has been registered in Doddapete police station.The accused has been admitted to Megan Hospital for medical treatment.

According to police, Prem Singh was stabbed after clashes broke out between two communities over the putting up of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar and 18th century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan on Monday.

Soon after, the district authorities claimed prohibitory orders in Shivamogga district.

As many as four persons have been arrested in the case, police said, ADGP (Law and Order) Alok Kumar told reporters here that a case has been booked under Section 307 of the IPC against Nadeem Rehman and Abdul Rehman for stabbing Singh aged 20, he said.

Heavy police have been deployed with 15 platoons of reserve police manning sensitive areas.

One SP, three ASPs and Dy SPs from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and 10 inspectors have been deputed to Shivamogga district additionally to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, Kuvempu University has declared a holiday for the colleges and postponed exams for post- graduation courses.

The schools and colleges are also closed down in the neighbouring town of Bhadravathi. (with UNI inputs)
