Karnataka: Kodagu could remain under lockdown

While the government is likely to press ahead with plans to ensure a return to normalcy in the state from Monday, Kodagu, a popular tourist destination for Bengalureans, could stay under lockdown.

Appachu Ranjan, Madikeri MLA, on Friday urged the Kodagu district administration not to completely lift restrictions from Monday. Ranjan has suggested that the administration continue with the lockdown for four days a week as the district is still reporting more than 100 positive cases daily. He has also asked authorities to restrict movement of tourists.

Two weeks ago, when the government announced Unlock measures, Kodagu decided to continue with restrictions on movement of people and on commercial establishments.

While the government permitted commercial establishments to open for five days a week from June 22, the Kodagu administration, citing its positivity rate, decided to keep the lid on people’s movement. Elected representatives such as Ranjan and KG Bopaiah, had also batted for restrictions to continue. Unless extended, current restrictions end on July 5.

Ranjan, a former minister, said he discussed the issue with Charulatha Somal, district deputy commissioner.

“Officials suggested a lockdown for two days a week, but I suggested that it continue for four days a week. Commercial establishments can operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays till 4pm,” Ranjan said.

He also said the return of migrant workers from other states has also posed health risks. These workers are quarantined for 14 days before they can return to work in coffee estates.
