HUBBALLI: Stricter border surveillance and night curfew are some of the measures on the Karnataka government’s table as chief minister Basavaraj Bommai is set to chair a meeting of health experts and senior officials on Sunday to decide on tougher restrictions as Omicron cases continue to increase in the state and the country.
“The Omicron cases are rising especially in Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The meeting in Bengaluru will decide the next course of action,” Bommai said.
Whether the government was contemplating reimposing night curfew, the CM said the meeting will decide on the measure. “As of now, the guidelines issued earlier are still in force in the state. We are reviewing the situation to see if stricter measures are needed,” he added.
Most infected persons are asymptomatic
The state health department is worried over the rise in Omicron variant cases with the Karnataka tally touching 31. A majority of the infected persons are asymptomatic. Barring the minors, all of them have been vaccinated.
On deferring the introduction of anti-conversion bill in the legislative council, Bommai refused to see it as a setback for the government. “If we had two more members (on our side in the house), we would have passed it,” he said, adding the bill would be tabled in the next session when the party’s strength in the upper house will be one short of a simple majority.
The state assembly passed the bill by voice vote on Thursday.
