BENGALURU: The government will soon take up widening and integration of Hebbal flyover to ease traffic congestion on the stretch, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Tuesday.
Replying to a question from Congress member Krishna Byregowda in the legislative assembly, the CM said the process of finalising tenders pegged at Rs 244 crore is on and they will be floated in April. “I’ll ensure a seamless flow of funds for the project,” he added. He made the statement a day after a 14-year-old girl, Akshaya, was killed after a speeding BBMP garbage truck knocked her down in front of Hebbal police station.
Bommai said the widening of Hebbal flyover, which was taken up in 2017, was stopped in 2019 as the government took a decision to provide a Metro connection to the international airport via Hebbal. “The government had to redesign the project to integrate both the Metro and flyover works. Now, the revised plan is ready, and public suggestions have also been called for. After inculcating suggestions, we will finalise the plan and float tenders,” he said.
According to the plan mooted by the state urban development department (UDD), the integrated flyover will be built to meet the estimated road traffic requirement of 2051. It also plans to develop an additional two-lane flyover to the west of the existing one, making it a five-lane movement from the city to the airport. While the existing elevated loop from the city to Tumakuru will have to be rebuilt after the new lanes are added, the existing elevated loop from the city to KR Puram will be retained. Similarly, the existing elevated connection from KR Puram to the city will have to be rebuilt.
From Tumakuru to the city, the loop will be removed to make this space available for multimodal integration and the BMTC bus stop. Vehicles will run further and take a U-turn through underpasses and travel to the city over the loop of KR Puram as per the proposed plan. Piers of the new flyover coming up on the western side will be located over the bund of Hebbal lake. “After the construction of piers, the lake bund will be brought back to its original condition...,” it said.
