Karnataka: CBSE curriculum at 29 schools run by minority department

HUBBALLI: Schools run by the minority welfare department have adopted the Central Board Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum for the 2022-23 academic year within three months of chief minister Basavaraj Bommai’s announcement in his maiden budget speech. The officials are pulling out all stops to adopt CBSE curriculum in order to bring them on a par with private schools.

Thus far, the department has introduced CBSE curriculum in 29 schools. One of the primary objectives of introducing central board syllabus in minority welfare department is to prepare the students to tackle competitive examinations such as the common entrance test, the National Eligibility Entrance Test, et al.

Secretary of the minority welfare department Major P Manivannan, along with his colleagues, have succeeded in introducing the curriculum in 29 schools in the first phase. Sources said that the department disbursed Rs 29 lakh towards the procurement of National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks, with each school receiving Rs 1 lakh.

The department has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Azim Premji Foundation to help conduct training programmes to help enhance the quality of education imparted at the schools. “The MoU will help assess the performance of both teachers and students. Data from this comprehensive assessment programme will help provide inputs on meaningful engagement to improve teaching at schools,” a source said.

Principal of APJ Abdul Kalam School in Hoolikatti, Belagavi district, BM Barki said, “Students are pleased with the introduction of CBSE syllabus at our school. The training session for our teachers is expected to start in a couple of weeks.”

Manivannan, meanwhile, said that, in keeping with the CM’s announcement, CBSE syllabus was to be introduced in one minority department school in each district. “This has already been achieved in 29 districts, and will ensure that one school from the remaining two districts too adopt CBSE curriculum,” he said.

MLC and former minister Basavaraj Horatti is all praise for the initiative, which he said would help improve the quality of education imparted to the students. “Given the competitive world we live in, quality education is the need of the hour, besides ensuring accommodation and food,” Horatti said.
