Kanpur: SIT on 1984 riots begins probe in 2 more cases, including triple murder

KANPUR: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots of Kanpur has initiated investigation with regard to two more cases, including one related to the murder of a man and his two sons in Naubasta area, after procuring details like documents, witnesses and accused related to it.

The SIT, constituted to re-investigate the riots in the city in the aftermath of the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has so far identified 89 accused in the 13 cases so far. Out of 89, 70 are alive and rest 19 accused have died till date.

The SIT in the 11 cases has handed over the list of the names of the accused to the government, while the investigation into case No 12 and 13 is still underway. The accused will be arrested as soon as the order is received.

As per the SIT sources, these two cases were reported from the Naubasta and Nazirabad police stations areas of the city.

“The rioters had killed a man and his two sons in case No 12 reported from Naubasta police station. The SIT has gathered all the evidence in this regard. More than a dozen accused have been identified. The verification process is in progress,” said SIT sources and added, “Similarly, in case no: 13, two persons of the Sikh community were killed by the mob.”

SIT DIG Balendu Bhushan Singh said, “So far, the investigation of 11 cases has been completed. The investigation of these 12th and 13th cases is already underway.”

“All the documents related to this case, names of witnesses, plaintiffs and accused have been found. The case No 12 was registered as 498/84 in the general diary of Naubasta police station, while the No 13 was registered as 315/84 in the GD of Nazirabad police station. In the case No 12 that was registered by Vijender Kaur, her husband Gurmendra Singh, father-in-law Nagina Singh and brother-in-law were murdered, while in case No 13 one Gurcharan Singh and Amlok Singh were killed by the rioters,” said Singh further.

Nearly 127 people were murdered in the city in the aftermath of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984. The SIT constituted on the instructions of the government is investigating the cases.
