Kalvin Phillips' England call-up questioned as Rodrigo opens up on Leeds United transfer

Here is your Leeds United morning digest for Wednesday, September 2.

Rodrigo explains move

Rodrigo has explained his move to Leeds United.

The striker is currently on international duty with Spain and was quizzed by the media about why he swapped Valencia for Elland Road.

He revealed there were two key factors behind the deal.

"The club had to look to let go a lot of players, I don't know if purely financially or for sporting reasons too," he told the press.

"When Leeds came up, it was really attractive to me. To play in the Premier League, to work with a great coach like Bielsa.

"I go to a club with history, which is doing things very well. In recent years, being one of the captains of Valencia, you end up living problem after problem.

"I wanted to enjoy football, train and think about playing."

Whites' first publicised friendly

Leeds United took part in their first publicised friendly on Tuesday, going down 3-0 to Stoke City.

This was far from the Whites' best XI, though, a large amount of experienced options were absent, such as Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich.

It was also the opportunity for Whites fans to see their new kit in action for the first time.

Phillips' call-up unhelpful

Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink has warned that Kalvin Phillips will feel increased pressure after his England call-up.

The former Whites striker told Genting Bet that he was delighted to see the midfielder in the England squad - but said that it adds more responsibility to shoulder.

He said: "Look, it's going to be a great experience for him but I would want him to not have to think about the England jersey yet and just think about only the Premier League.

"He's going to be a very, very important person for Leeds next year. Because he's Leeds through and through.

"He’s going to be the face of Leeds this season, so he will have already a lot on his shoulders."
