Feb. 08--A boy was arrested and charged as a juvenile Saturday in connection with the December robbery of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's teenage son, police said.
The male juvenile, whose age was not immediately released by police, was arrested Saturday in the Dec. 19 attack in 4200 block of North Hermitage Avenue, police spokesman Martin Maloney said in an email.
The boy confessed to the robbery and was cited as a juvenile with robbery and aggravated battery in the public way, Maloney said. No information on when he might be in court was released.
Emanuel spokesman Adam Collins issued a statement following the arrest.
"The Mayor and Amy (Rule, Emanuel's wife) are grateful to the dedicated men and women of the Chicago Police Department for their hard work, and they would like to thank everyone who shared kind thoughts and wishes for their son's well-being," Collins said in the statement. "As parents, they continue to ask that the media respect their family's privacy."
The robbery took place about 10:05 p.m. Dec. 19 as Zach Emanuel was talking on his cellphone on Hermitage Avenue, near the Emanuel home, when two males approached him from behind, according to a police report.
One of the attackers "placed his arm around the victim's neck in a rear chokehold," and the second one struck the teen with a fist, knocking him to the ground. The robbers took the teen's cellphone and patted him down, the police report said. The robbers also went through his pockets, police said at the time.
"The offenders then asked the victim, 'What else you got?' (and) forced the victim to enter his security code to unlock the phone," the police report said.
The robbers then ran away. Zach Emanuel was treated for cuts and bruises on his face by a personal physician at his home, according to the report.
