'Justice for my kids': mother of crash victims hits out

A mother says she has been living in hell for nearly two years after two of her children were killed in a horrific high-speed car smash.

Johnson Kokozian, 22, was allegedly behind the wheel of a SUV during a tragic smash at Heckenberg, in southwest Sydney, on September 1, 2023.

Police claim he was driving the Mercedes-Benz AMG at nearly double the speed limit for the 50km/h zone when he crashed head-on into a car containing two siblings.

Kokozian is accused of failing to help before fleeing the scene, where Alina Kauffman, 24, and Ernesto Salazar, 15, were later pronounced dead.

He has not yet entered pleas to 11 charges, including two counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death.

Outside Campbelltown Courthouse, the slain siblings' mother said the years since her children's deaths had been a hell made more painful by the protracted legal proceedings.

"I want justice for my kids," Angelina Kauffman said.

"I'm just existing, I'm not living. But I've got to keep fighting for justice."

The alleged driver's father Kagadour Hanna Kokozian, 63, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to trying to conceal the fatal hit-and-run collision and hindering a police investigation.

Prosecutors immediately asked for him to be taken into custody before sentencing, arguing the offences were so serious he could only face a jail term.

The father went to the scene of the crash after his son fled to his house and was told two people had been killed, the court was told.

"It's really bad," he said after seeing the destruction.

After his son told him he had been driving, the elder Kokozian called police to report his son's car as stolen.

The false report hindered the police investigation into the crash and made it difficult to determine who was involved, the Crown prosecutor contended.

But Kagadour Kokozian's lawyer Oussama Elfawal said there was no evidence his client knew the extent of the accident at the time.

He argued the 63-year-old had been on bail for nearly two years without incident and his clean record and poor health meant he could possibly receive a jail term in the community.

Magistrate Peter Thompson said the offences were "both tragic and serious" but he could not be satisfied Kagadour Kokozian would certainly be sentenced to full-time imprisonment.

However, he cautioned the man the decision was not indicative of the sentence he would be handed in the NSW District Court later this year.

"You are facing the real prospect of a full time jail sentence," the magistrate warned.

Kokozian's girlfriend Tiana Savignano, 23, and passenger Cruz Pamoana Davis-Tuka, 23, are also accused of trying to cover up details of the crash but have not yet entered pleas.

Savignano successfully varied her bail conditions on Wednesday to allow her to talk on the phone with Kokozian if they don't discuss the case or their alleged offending.

Kokozian's friend Laila Moukhallaletti was sentenced in 2024 to a 18-month community corrections order for her role in trying to conceal the crash from police.
