‘Just add it to the playlist’: Dollar Tree manager lets her older worker pick the music. He puts on something completely unexpected

One Dollar Tree worker left his co-worker gagged with his unexpected music taste, leading her to share the story with 2.8 million people on TikTok.

In a viral clip, Emily (@croupmushroom) reveals how she used to be a manager at Dollar Tree and worked the overnight shift. During this time, she would play music over the speaker and let each worker have a turn adding a song to the playlist, she explains. One night, however, she worked with an older fellow for the first time.

“He was probably 40 and I was 19,” Emily says. She recalls how she invited him to “play whatever [he] wants,” and he hesitated, saying that he “listens to weird music.”

“No problem, just add it to the playlist,” Emily says she assured him. The TikToker expected to hear “old people music” or some ‘80s beats.

However, she never in a million years expected to hear the tune that blasted out of the speakers.

“I don’t think you’d ever be able to guess what song he played,” Emily continues. She adds that it was Christmastime and they were working right next to each other when the song came on.

The TikToker then plays “DDLG” by ppcocaine, formerly known as TrapBunnieBubbles. The song currently has 14 million views on YouTube after going viral during COVID-19. For context, the rapper, whose real name is Lilliane Catherine Diomi, is a social media personality and TikTok influencer. Her songs often go viral on the video-sharing platform for their tone and vulgar context. In a 2020 article, the Los Angeles Times called then-19-year-old Diomi’s lyrics “so over-the-top sexual that they make ‘WAP’ read like ‘The Notebook.’”

People are gagged

With “DDLG” being an expletive-filled song about sex, then, it’s no surprise Emily’s viewers were flabbergasted.

“My jaw is to the floor. WHAT,” one user said. Another wrote, “Okay, I like ppcocaine but this song in particular is WILD to share with other humans.”

A third person joked, “God forbid a man has great taste.” One thought ppcocaine was the “perfect vibe” for Dollar Tree.

However, a handful of other viewers were caught up on one detail Emily mentioned in the clip.

“Dollar tree got an overnight crew?” a top comment with 12,000 likes read.

Overnight workers are not common at every Dollar Tree store, since it depends on the sizing and stocking needs. According to a former Dollar Tree manager on Reddit, “Only the highest volume stores have completely off-hour stocking, those with 3milion or more in sales yearly.”

Dollar Tree backlash

While Emily’s mega-viral clip gained attention for something other than where she worked, several shoppers have gone viral after sharing their frustrations with the chain. Dollar Tree made headlines when it raised its prices yet again by 25%, and after adding more security measures like cameras inside stores. One shopper even claimed that the workers were hoarding popular items for themselves, like the viral hand sanitizers.
