Jurgen Klopp gives update on Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott situations at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has explained the current Liverpool situations for Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho following their spells out of the starting XI.

The two former Fulham prospects have had differing roles so far this term. Elliott had previously been ever-present in the squad before recently enduring a spell away.

Carvalho, meanwhile, had made 11 appearances in the Premier League prior to the World Cup - but since returning from the enforced break, he has featured once in a two-minute cameo during the latter stages of the defeat to Bournemouth.

Klopp admitted that the current selection headache is a rare feeling during this campaign, which has been one of the most testing in recent memory.

Despite their lack of first-team action, the German hailed the two 20-year-olds for their high-level output in training. Carvalho has been lauded for his role model-like qualities while Elliott is "very, very close" to returning to the fold and adding to his 27 Premier League appearances this term.

"He's training exceptionally, Fabio Carvalho is training exceptionally," Klopp told reporters on Friday. "That's the hardest part, we haven't had it for the whole season, now we have it and we leave five players at home, all of a sudden are no longer in your squad. Crazy.

"Harvey is very, very close to starting again and Fabio, for the situation in which he is now, training on a super level and for not being involved - how he deals with it - I have to say that's a role model, not that he's happy with the situation but he never gives up.

"It's unbelievable, I didn't think it was his best skill when he arrived here because he is super, super talented. The character he shows here is exceptional."
