Jurgen Klopp facing bleak top four truth but Liverpool players must take responsibility for 'joke' situation

Jurgen Klopp described Saturday’s loss against Brighton as the worst game of his coaching career, and it’s hard to argue with that statement.

In terms of other matches that could take that title, there was that 3-0 defeat at Watford three years ago, Brentford was bad recently and we were awful at Napoli back in September. These poor performances have been happening far too often this season.

Make no mistake about it, Brighton have got some really good players. They looked very youthful compared to us, and most teams do right now, but we are being outrun and outfought each week. You can beat the best team in the world but if you get outrun, that is not acceptable. You have to take pride in your performances, otherwise you shouldn’t be at the club. Our fans wasted a weekend going down to Brighton and a week’s wages to see that performance. We know the squad is better than they are showing and they have to regroup right now.

Saturday would have been a different game if the six players Liverpool currently have out injured had featured, we certainly wouldn’t have lost 3-0. It is guaranteed to hurt you when you have three or four forwards out, but making excuses over injuries isn't going to solve anything. When you’re down to the bare bones, you expect your big players to put in big performances. Mo, the three midfielders and Matip didn’t do that. That all comes down to problems all over the pitch.

We’re not only out of the title race right now, we are nearly out of the top four race. There is half a season to go, that’s the only good thing about it. If we somehow get our form back, we can still get fourth. If you get momentum, you can go on a serious run - like we did last year to make up ground on City in the title race.

Klopp will be hurting - but won't walk away

I really do feel sorry for Klopp because he has given us great times. I have been there as a manager, albeit on a smaller scale, when manager of Tranmere in the First Division. It’s awful when you know you can’t really do much to change a negative situation. He is not getting a reaction from the players, which is what he needs.

As bad as things are right now for Liverpool, I don’t see Klopp walking away from the job. Of course he was annoyed on Saturday at full-time, but what options did he have from the bench? The players are letting themselves and the manager down, and they know that. You don’t become a bad team or bad players overnight.

Alisson was probably, yet again, our best player on the pitch and it’s becoming a bit of a joke how often that is proving to be the case. Klopp will be having sleepless nights, take it from me as I’ve been there. I couldn’t take losing games, but the players should be hurting too.
