Jurgen Klopp explains why Cody Gakpo and Jordan Henderson miss out for Liverpool against Brentford

Cody Gakpo and Jordan Henderson are both missing for Liverpool as they travel to face Brentford.

The Reds are hoping to make it five Premier League wins in a row in their opening match of 2023, one that would move them a step closer to the top four.

They do not have new man Gakpo available though, despite the Dutchman officially now being a Liverpool player after his move from PSV for a fee in the region of £35m.

The 23-year-old is not yet able to play for the Reds and instead looks set to make his debut for the club in the FA this weekend against Wolves.

“I have no news,” Klopp told Sky Sports when asked about Gakpo’s absence.

“We hope he gets permission tomorrow to train fully with us, that would be great but that’s all I know.”

Henderson meanwhile has been ruled out of the match against Brentford due to concussion.

The Liverpool played the full 90 minutes against Leicester last time out as the Reds edged past the Foxes with the help of two Wout Faes own goals, but is not available against the Bees.

In his absence, Harvey Elliott, Thiago and Fabinho, available again after the birth of his first child, start in midfield.
