Jurgen Klopp has dropped the biggest hint yet Liverpool could sign a centre-back this transfer window after being dealt a double defensive injury blow.
Joel Matip damaged his ankle ligaments during the first half of the 3-1 Premier League win at Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening.
Liverpool were already without Fabinho, who had missed the game with a minor muscle issue.
With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term injury victims, Liverpool ended the game with Jordan Henderson and Nat Phillips as the centre-back pairing, and 19-year-old Rhys Williams as the only other option.
And with the deadline approaching on Monday night, Klopp accepts he won’t be “picky” over a potential new arrival.
“You can imagine we think about everything, of course,” said the Reds boss.
“We thought the whole time, we are thinking the whole time. It’s about doing the right thing.
“I’m not picky or whatever, but we need to find the right player.
“We have players still, but not a lot in the defensive line to be honest – it’s really incredible what is happening there.”
Matip appeared to be struggling towards the first half and must now be considered a major doubt for Sunday’s trip to West Ham United.
But Liverpool fear the injury may be serious and the 29-year-old will now undergo a scan to determine the extent of the damage.
“We got aware of the struggle of Joel Matip with his ankle,” said Klopp.
“There was no chance to play on. It is his ankle ligaments.”
