Jurgen Klopp clarifies Sir Alex Ferguson exchange and apologises for 4am Liverpool message

Jurgen Klopp has apologised to Alex Ferguson for waking the former Manchester United boss up with a late-night message after winning the LMA Manager of the Year award.

It was back in July when Klopp beat Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth and Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder to the prestigious individual accolade after lifting Liverpool's first league title in 30 years.

In a message of congratulations at the time, Ferguson praised the Reds boss for his success, before jokingly adding that Klopp was forgiven for waking him up at 4am by celebrating winning the Premier League.

“Liverpool, 30 years since winning that league - incredible and thoroughly deserved," Ferguson said. "The performance level of your team was outstanding. Your personality went right through the whole club. I think it was a marvellous, marvellous performance.

“I’ll forgive you for waking me up at half-past three in the morning to tell me you’d won the league - thank you!"

Unsurprisingly, given the rivalry between Liverpool and United, plenty of Reds supporters saw the funny side of Ferguson being awoken in the small hours by Klopp's celebrations.

However, Klopp has now moved to clarify the situation saying he didn't mean to disturb the Scot with his response.

"I didn't call him, I should clarify that," Klopp said. "I sent him a message.

"The problem was that I came back late in my room that night, obviously, and I couldn't sleep immediately so I went through the messages I got and one of them was from Alex Ferguson.

"I just replied in a very polite way I think. It was about 3.30am-4am and I didn't expect him to have his phone next to his bed!

"I didn't want to wake him up. If that happened then sorry Alex! But since then we have not been in contact.

"He is still the former Man United manager and I don't think he wants to talk to me too much about the success of Liverpool.

"He respects it but it's not his favourite thing to watch on television."
