Jurassic World's Bryce Dallas Howard fought to keep character's high heels for sequel

Back in 2015, Jurassic World caused a minor shoe-based controversy when it came to Bryce Dallas Howard's character Claire.

Namely, why she spends the entire film sprinting across the jungle in a pair of heels; would it not strike a woman who works at what essentially amounts to a very large zoo that maybe, just maybe, she should pack a pair of flats in her bag?

The film's director, Colin Trevorrow, tweeted out an image board of the potential sturdy boots Claire will wear for the majority (including the crucial running from dinosaurs parts) of the film's sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, directed by J.A. Bayona, but fans have been warned upfront: the heels also make a return.

However, Bryce Dallas Howard told the Radio Times that it was partly due to her own insistence: the original screenplay was so careful about not showing Claire in heels, that she was specifically written to be wearing sneakers even in an office environment.

"It was written like, "Claire's wearing sneakers.' Like, specifically, Claire's wearing sneakers," she said. "And I just circled that when I was reading it and I was like, 'No... no, it's an office, Claire would wear heels.' And then it was like another scene where I'm like, 'hmm, well Claire's kind of like... she's going to wear heels in this scene also."

She explained that she found the heels important to her characterisation and to the journey she takes, launched from a strict corporate world into the reverberating chaos of unleashed prehistoric creatures.

“It’s a part of the character and kind of a metaphor for her journey. And that’s how it was intended in the first, and intended in the second," she said. "It’s important, I think, to be truthful to the character in that way. In that she can do both! She can wear flats, and she can wear heels!”

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hits UK cinemas 6 June.
