NEW DELHI: The Indian men's hockey team showcased a remarkable comeback to secure a comfortable 3-1 victory against Japan in their second Pool A match at the Junior Asia Cup held in Salalah, Oman. Araijeet Singh Hundal, Sharda Nand Tiwari, and Uttam Singh each scored a goal for India, while Kumpei Yasuda found the back of the net for Japan.
India demonstrated their attacking intent right from the start, eager to take an early lead against Japan. However, Japan's defence held strong in the initial exchanges, frustrating their opponents' efforts. As the match progressed, the Indian colts began creating more scoring opportunities, with Sudeep Chirmako testing the Japanese goalkeeper. Despite Japan coming close to scoring late in the quarter, India remained resolute, and the teams entered the break with a 0-0 scoreline.
Against the run of play, Japan broke the deadlock as Kumpei Yasuda capitalised on an opportunity, slotting the ball past the Indian goalkeeper to give his team a 1-0 lead at halftime break.
After the break, Japan started the second half strongly, keeping India pinned in their own half for a considerable period. However, the Indian team rallied back, equalising soon after the restart when Araijeet Singh Hundal fired a powerful shot into the net from the left side.
With the momentum on their side, India intensified their offensive play and earned a series of penalty corners. It was from one of these penalty corners that they took the lead, with Sharda Nand unleashing a powerful strike into the top corner of the goal.
Entering the final quarter, India held a 2-1 advantage. They began the period with renewed determination, eager to extend their lead. Eleven minutes into the quarter, India won a penalty corner, and their captain, Uttam Singh, confidently converted to give his side a two-goal cushion.
Despite Japan's attempts to mount a quick counterattack, India's defenders showcased tremendous resilience, putting their bodies on the line to protect their lead. The Indian team effectively saw out the contest, securing a 3-1 victory.
India's next match will be against arch-rivals Pakistan on May 27, followed by a clash against Thailand in their final pool game on May 28. As the tournament progresses, the Indian men's hockey team aims to build on their impressive performances and continue their quest for success at the Junior Asia Cup.
