July washout forecast as flood alert issued amid yellow warning for rain

A weather warning for extreme downpours has been issued as Ayrshire is set for a July washout.

The Met Office has placed a yellow weather warning for rain across the region.

The warning will be in place from 4pm today until 6am tomorrow morning.

A flood alert has also been placed on Ayrshire & Arran by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

Motorists have warned that heavy rain could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

Commuters have also been told they could face delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

A yellow warning also means there is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads, and there is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.

There is also a small risk that homes and businesses could be flooded causing damage to some buildings.

A flood alert issued by SEPA reads: "Heavy showers are forecast across Scotland from Monday afternoon into Tuesday. This may cause surface water flooding and flooding from small watercourses but not all areas will experience these.

"In areas affected by the heaviest rainfall, impacts may include localised flooding of properties and disruption to travel, particularly if the heaviest rain falls over built up areas prone to flooding or over the transport network.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property. Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188.

"This FLOOD ALERT is now in force until further notice and was sent by phone and sms free of charge to registered customers of our Floodline direct warning service.
