Joy for drivers as Silverlink roadworks finishing date is finally revealed

Thousands of drivers will be relieved to know the Silverlink roadworks are finally coming to an end.

Work to build a triple-decker roundabout has been taking place at the A19 and A1058 Coast Road junction, in North Tyneside , since summer 2016.

Ever since then, the surrounding roads have had a reduced speed limit of 30mph, controlled by cameras, as well as various contraflows to allow the roadwork to take place.

Now Highways England has confirmed the junction will be open to traffic from 6am on Monday following the completion of the £75m scheme , as planned.

A third layer has been created at the roundabout, which will allow traffic to continue straight along the A19.

The contractors removed 80,000 cubic metres of soil to develop the new underpass beneath the junction.

And major work has been taking place over the past few months to make sure the roundabout was ready on time.

Fresh hope the A1 will be dualled through the whole of Northumberland

Deep drainage and pavement construction was completed, as was permanent cladding to the piled walls. New bridges for pedestrians and cyclists were also installed.

By February, they were operating 12 shifts a week, with five dedicated night shifts.

The Highways team says the improvements at Silverlink will reduce congestion, improve journey times and safety, and unlock economic growth in the area.

Around 35,000 vehicles are expected to use the new road.

The average speed cameras will be taken away from the site once the work is complete.
